Prequel/Sequel:

In todays lecture it was about prequel and sequel, which is one of the choices on the self-negotiated brief. The direction in which Stephen took this lecture was via subject connections. All the respective design pieces of work can be linked to another respective design piece of work. Stephen then showed us a video "everything is a remix" by kirkby ferguson. The video presents a variety of plagiarism examples, along with examples of way to reference, it also partly discusses where the line can be drawn.

After watching the video, Stephen mentioned this quote "copy or be copied", he mentioned the name Led Zeppelin. Zeppelin was used as an example because there is a few of their tracks that sample other band melodies. "Stairway to heave" was mentioned, but one of the most popular Zeppelin songs, the melody to this song, is originally from a song called "taurus" by the band "Spirit" in 1968. Zeppelin didn't credit Spirit, this is one of the reason why an issue was raised.

Kate Cullinane is another reference used within this lecture. Kate states "nothing is original, and are rather reconfigurations of different elements. To express this point films examples were used with the marvel movies, such as iron man, the avenger and the incredible hulk ETC. With each of these linking in one way or another through background plots or specific references. However, I do feel that  marvel can do this because it is all there work, its not like they are copying another film companies films or scenes. After this a point was raised that work is often seen as "standard elements". That when using/copying prior techniques, they have to be first appropriated, then transformed and finally subverted before used in the final piece. Basically, they need to changed and edited slightly.

The lecture was concluded with, designers should follow the rules. But shouldn't be afraid to reference another designers piece of work.
